Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? Fixes That Actually Work

It is easily the most common message we get from customers: “my vape has started tasting burnt — is it broken?” The good news is that a burnt or harsh taste is usually a fixable problem, not a dead device. The bad news is that sometimes it genuinely means the device is done. Here is the honest, practical rundown from people who ship these things every day, so you can work out which one you are dealing with in about two minutes.
What a burnt taste actually is
Inside every disposable is a coil wrapped in a cotton wick. The wick soaks up e-liquid, the coil heats it into vapour, and more liquid is drawn in to keep the wick wet. That harsh, acrid, slightly scorched flavour — often called a “dry hit” — happens when the coil fires while the wick is dry or only half-soaked. Instead of vaporising liquid, it is scorching the cotton itself. Once cotton is properly burnt, that taste is baked in and does not come back out. That is the single most important thing to understand: a dry hit is a warning, a burnt coil is permanent.
The common causes (and honest fixes)
1. Chain vaping
This is the number one culprit in our experience. When you take puff after puff without a break, the wick cannot pull fresh liquid in fast enough to keep up. You end up firing the coil against a half-dry wick, and it starts to catch. The fix is simple and it genuinely works: slow down. Give the device several seconds between puffs so the wick can re-saturate, and take shorter, gentler draws rather than long hard pulls. Most people who tell us a device “tastes off” are simply pulling on it too fast, too hard, or too often.
2. The device is running low
As a disposable nears the end of its e-liquid, there simply is not enough left to keep the wick wet, so every puff starts to catch. If your device is well through its rated life — and the flavour has been fading before it turned harsh — this is almost certainly it. No fix here; the device has done its job. This is a genuine ending, not a fault.
3. A brand-new device that was not primed
Occasionally a fresh device hits harsh straight out of the packet because the wick has not fully soaked yet, especially if it has been stored somewhere cold and the liquid has thickened. Before writing it off, let it sit upright for 10 to 15 minutes, give it a few gentle taps to move liquid toward the wick, and take a couple of slow, priming puffs without firing hard. Warming it in your hands for a minute helps cold, thick liquid flow. This recovers more “faulty” new devices than anything else we suggest.
4. Heat, cold and storage
Leaving a device baking in a hot car or in direct sun can thin the liquid and let it seep away from the wick; extreme cold thickens it so the wick cannot absorb it. Either way you get dry hits. Store it upright, out of direct sun, at a sensible room temperature, and let a cold device warm up before you use it.
5. Draw style and settings
Long, hard pulls heat the coil faster than the wick can keep up, which pushes it toward a dry hit even when there is plenty of liquid left. On any device with an adjustable airflow, opening the airflow a little and easing off the intensity of your draw generally keeps the coil cooler and the flavour cleaner.
Quick reference: cause, feel, fix
| Cause | What it feels like | Fix |
| Chain vaping | Fine at first, turns harsh after a run of quick puffs | Wait several seconds between puffs; shorter, softer draws |
| Running low on liquid | Flavour fading for a while, then consistently burnt | Device is spent — time to replace it |
| New device not primed | Harsh from the very first puffs, out of the box | Rest upright 10–15 min, tap gently, take slow priming puffs |
| Heat / cold / bad storage | Off or scorched after a hot car or cold night | Store upright, out of sun; warm cold devices in hand first |
| Long, hard pulls | Harsh on big draws, cleaner on gentle ones | Ease off; open airflow if adjustable |
When the device is genuinely done
Here is the honest line we hold with customers: if the burnt taste appeared gradually as the flavour faded, or if resting, tapping and slowing down made no difference at all, the coil is finished and no trick will bring it back. Trying to push a burnt device further only makes it more unpleasant. If, on the other hand, it was fine an hour ago and only turned harsh during a fast run of puffs, it is almost certainly recoverable — put it down, wait, and come back to it.
How to avoid it next time
- Pace yourself — a few seconds between puffs is the single biggest thing you can do.
- Take shorter, gentler draws instead of long hard pulls.
- Store the device upright, out of direct sun and extreme temperatures.
- Prime a new device: let it settle a few minutes before your first proper puff.
- Buy genuine stock. This one matters more than people think.
Why genuine stock makes a difference
A lot of “this device tastes burnt from day one” complaints trace back to counterfeit or old, poorly stored product with weak wicks and rough coils that dry out under normal use. We stock 100% original devices only, which is the simplest way to avoid coil and wicking problems that fakes are prone to. We ship fast and discreetly Australia-wide, and shipping is free on orders of 10 or more.
If you have been fighting a device that never tasted right, it is often worth starting fresh with something reliable rather than persisting with a dud. In our experience these consistently deliver clean flavour when used sensibly:
